What to Expect Before and After LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK is one of the safest and most popular elective medical procedures available. But as with any surgery, many people don’t know what to expect before or after LASIK, and the thought of having surgery on your eye(s) can be intimidating.

When it comes to your eyes, you shouldn’t trust anyone but the best. Dr. Shah and Dr. Wasserman are the most experienced LASIK surgeons in Philadelphia and New Jersey. With 40 years of combined experience, they’ve both performed over 100,000 LASIK procedures. So, you’re in good hands when you choose LASIK Experts for your vision correction procedure.

Our clinical staff is committed to ensuring our patients know what to expect before, during, and after LASIK. We take our time explaining the procedure and guaranteeing all our patient’s questions and concerns are addressed. Below, we discuss what you can expect from LASIK to help you decide if this procedure is right for you.

What to Expect Before LASIK

The first step is coming in for a free, no-obligation consultation. During this appointment, our clinical staff will perform a series of diagnostic tests to confirm your eligibility. This will allow us to then recommend a procedure that best suits your needs.

There are different types of vision correction procedures, but we’ll explain their differences and why one may be recommended to you over the others. You’ll also have a chance to have any questions or concerns addressed.

Additionally, we’ll breakdown the cost of the surgery and will review the financing options we offer to make LASIK more affordable. For example, we have a Lowest Price Guarantee*, so if you find a vision correction provider offering the same services for a lower price, we’ll match it and take an additional $100 off the total. It may also be possible to offset the cost of your surgery by using your HSA or FSA to pay for it.

If you’re a good candidate for LASIK, we’ll schedule your surgery for a separate date and provide you with pre-operative instructions on how to prepare beforehand, such as when to remove your contact lenses.

What to Expect During LASIK

On the day of your procedure, our team will once again confirm your candidacy as well as go through the surgery steps. You’ll be provided detailed post-operative instructions, such as how to use your eye drops and when you can resume specific activities.

You can expect to be in the clinic for several hours on the day of your surgery. But one of the benefits of LASIK is that it’s often quick. The procedure itself usually takes no more than 10 minutes, with the laser used for less than a minute per eye.

Another benefit of LASIK is that it’s virtually painless. Prior to the procedure, our staff will administer numbing anesthetic eye drops to minimize discomfort. You may also be offered a mild sedative to help you relax. Most of our patients are surprised by how quick and virtually painless the LASIK procedure is.

What to Expect After LASIK

After the surgery, you’ll be instructed to go home and rest. You won’t be able to drive immediately after the surgery, so you’ll need to arrange transportation beforehand. Follow your post-operative instructions closely as you recover.

Most patients see an improvement in their vision right after the procedure. But you’ll still need to wear sunglasses for the first 24-hours after your procedure to protect your eyes, even indoors. These will be provided to you by the clinic, and we’ll explain how long and why they should be worn.

You’ll need to come in for a 24-hour, post-operative consultation. This allows our team to monitor the healing of your eyes. It’s also an opportunity for you to bring up any concerns or questions you may have after LASIK.

The recovery from LASIK is often mild. Most patients are back to their normal routines within 24-hours. It’s normal to experience some side effects, (such as dry eyes, light sensitivity, and halos) but these should improve as your eyes heal. Our clinical staff will be available throughout your recovery to address any issues, should they arise. Your comfort and satisfaction are our main priority.
